Research Overview

In the area of basic research, the Refaai lab is studying the effect of ABO antibodies on platelet function and coagulation parameters.

Dr. Refaai is also PI on three clinical trials:

  • CSL Bering: Two studies of Beriplex® P/N compared with plasma for rapid reversal of coagulopathy induced by coumarin derivatives in subjects with acute major bleeding. One study involves patients presenting in ED with excessive bleeding. The other study involves patients requiring emergency surgery, who may develop excessive bleeding due to the drugs they have been taking.
  • Daiichi Sankyo: An evaluation of Heparin/Edoxaban versus Warfarin in subjects with symptomatic deep-vein thrombosis and/or pulmonary embolism.

Two additional clinical studies involving blood coagulation and blood disorders are being considered. These studies complement the basic research in transfusion practice undertaken by Dr. Neil Blumberg and extend the expertise of the Transfusion Medicine section of URMC Labs into the clinical trials area.
