Program Summary

Overview

The faculty of the Finger Lakes Regional Poison and Drug Information Center has been selected by the American Association of Poison Control Centers to provide electronic continuing education for Specialists in Poison Information across the United States.  This program is comprised of biweekly modules. Additionally, four comprehensive modules will be provided throughout the year.  Every six months, you will receive documentation of your participation.If you participate, verification of your participation will also be provided to your poison center.

Daily Information Pieces

This educational component will be organized as biweekly modules with completion of a post-test and documentation of participation occurring at the end of each module.  Modules will provide participants with one question each day, followed by a brief discussion.  Question number fourteen of each module will serve as a post-test and requires a response.  Answers for the post-test will be provided to you when you e-mail the post-test back to us. As part of the learning process, we encourage you to review the literature that these questions are based upon.  Emphasis will be placed on new bodies of information as well as areas of clinical controversy.

Program Faculty

Authorship and review of these modules will be provided by the faculty from the Finger Lakes Regional Poison and Drug Information Center, as well as the Western New York Poison Center and the Central New York Poison Center.  Each module will also be reviewed by at least one other expert in the field.

Program Objectives

The electronic continuing education program will focus on the following poison/drug information and clinical toxicology topics:

Antidotes and other treatments
Bites and envenomations
Chemical toxicities
Drug information related topics
Drug/medication toxicities
Poison center operations
Recent literature updates

Upon completion of these electronic continuing education modules, the participants will be able to:

1. Describe the epidemiology of specific toxicities

2. Describe the mechanisms of action of specific toxins

3. Identify the clinical effects associated with specific toxins

4. Formulate a treatment plan for specific toxicities
