A 34 year old 70 kg male presents to a local hospital
following a witnessed ingestion of antifreeze 45 minutes earlier.
The hospital stocks fomepizole in its pharmacy. The emergency department
physician is calling and requesting recommendations on the use of fomepizole
versus ethanol in this patient. Please provide recommendations for
the physician which include: indications for fomepizole, potential disadvantages
and advantages of fomepizole, fomepizole dosage and administration guidelines
for this patient, and potential adverse effects of fomepizole.
