Module XVII - A Review of Animal Toxicology

Friday May 21, 1999 - Question 14

A dog owner calls the poison center because she has just witnessed her bichon frise eating a container of  Mouse Pruf II (a long-acting anticoagulant rodenticide containing brodifacoum).  Her dog weighs 15 lbs, and was bred 45 days ago (mean gestation period in dogs is 63 days).  What immediate decontamination recommendations do you make?  It is now 10:00 PM, but the caller lives in a city with an emergency veterinary clinic.  Would you refer the dog into the emergency clinic?  What recommendations would you give to the veterinarian concerning both the dog and her unborn puppies?
