Module VII -  Dietary Supplements: Herbal / Natural Products

INTRODUCTION

Welcome to Module VII of the American Association of Poison Control Center’s electronic continuing education program for Specialists in Poison Information.  This module will provide a basic knowledge of the regulatory process governing dietary supplements.  Additionally, several dietary supplements will be discussed with regard to their use, pharmacology, and toxicity.  Another program on dietary supplements will be provided in the future in an attempt to cover as many agents as possible.
 

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

Upon completion of this module, participants will:
1. Understand the regulatory process governing dietary supplements.
2. Recognize the importance of monitoring and reporting adverse events related to dietary supplements.
3. Understand the pharmacology of the selected dietary supplements.
4. Understand the toxicity associated with the selected dietary supplements.
