Functions

Each clinical department has a Compliance Liaison, appointed by the Chair, who acts as an advocate for department compliance and supervises the effort on a departmental level. The Liaisons, the Compliance Program Medical Director, and the Compliance Officer meet periodically to discuss compliance issues. The Compliance Liaison assumes responsibility to:

  • Raise and maintain compliance awareness;
  • Address compliance issues;
  • Communicate Compliance Program updates to the department;
  • Participate in planning department education and training sessions;
  • Assist in drafting department billing guidelines;
  • Refer issues to and collaborate with the Compliance Officer.

Education Programs

PRACTITIONER DOCUMENTATION TRAINING

The Compliance Office provides training and education to practitioners (physicians, nurse practitioners, and physician assistants, etc.) on the components of Evaluation and Management (E&M) coding and how to assign the correct code based on documentation and coding guidelines. We also cover Medicare Teaching Physician Rules, the Medicare Primary Care Exception and guidelines for procedure coding and documentation.

Newly hired physicians will receive an initial compliance overview as a part of their New Physician Orientation program. They are also required to complete a web-based training program covering Rules for Supervision Physicians in a Teaching Setting.

Individual or group education sessions can be arranged by calling the Compliance Office at 275-1609.
