ClerkshipsThe senior medical student clerkship in urology lasts one week. Emphasis is placed on basic concepts of urologic disease, stressing the pathogenesis, physiology, anatomy, and bacteriology involved. Newer concepts in cancer immunology and immunotherapy, andrology (male reproductive physiology), and renal transplantation are emphasized. The students attend the weekly Radiology Conference and seminars held on Wednesdays by the Department of Urology, and teaching rounds with the department chairman and other faculty.ElectivesSenior medical students from the University of Rochester as well as outside institutions may apply to complete an elective in urology. The instruction received is along the same format as for the students on the one-week rotation, except more concentrated. Under supervision, the students integrate into the regular activities of the service, including clinics and surgeries.Research OpportunitiesResearch opportunities exist in the Department of Urology for the medical student. Summer fellowships can be arranged in prostate cancer research currently focusing on neuroendocrine cell differentiation with clinical and pathologic correlation, andrology, and immunotherapy related to infiltrative bladder cancer disease.Residency and Postdoctoral Research ProgramsThe urology residency is a four-year program following completion of two years of postgraduate training in general surgery. The clinical and surgical experience begins in the first year of residency. The second year is spent mainly in the research laboratory under the guidance of the laboratory director and research associate in urology. The second-year resident also attends to patients at Monroe Community Hospital and accompanies the urology chief resident to Rochester General Hospital during a single three-month rotation. Increased clinical responsibilities begin in the third year, spent at both Strong Memorial and The Genesee hospitals. The final year as chief resident is divided between Strong Memorial and Rochester General hospitals. [For a more complete program description, see The Program pages.]The Department of Urology offers selected postdoctoral research fellowships in the research laboratory for one or two years.
