File Naming and Structure
Filenames should be short (under 24 characters) but meaningful. Use full words separated by hyphens for optimal search engine ranking (e.g., patient-services.cfm). Do no use an underscore ( _ ) between words. Filenames should not contain special characters (e.g., \ / ? < > " ! # % & * @ + = : ; , ~ ) or spaces.
In addition, make sure you include a unique title (in HTML <title></title> tags ) on each page in your site, in the style of:
Content Title - Department Name - University of Rochester Medical Center
In general, follow these simple rules if you are setting up the structure for your site:
All images should go in an "images" directory.
Word, PDF, PowerPoint, etc., files should go in a "documents" directory.
Videos should go in a "media" directory.
Every directory (except "images" and "documents") should have an index.html or index.cfm file.
