Dr. C. McCollister Evarts completed his residency in Orthopaedics at Strong then joined the faculty of the Cleveland Clinic Foundation and was appointed Chairman of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery in 1970. In 1974 he returned to the University of Rochester to serve as Professor and Chairman of the newly founded Department of Orthopaedics.

Dr. Evarts served on the Board of Governors of the American College of Surgeons and as president of the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery, the American Orthopaedic Association, The Hip Society, the Association of Orthopaedic Chairs, and chair of the Association of Academic Health Centers. In 1987 he became the Chief Executive Officer, Senior Vice President for Health Affairs, and Dean of the College of Medicine, at the Pennsylvania State University, Milton S. Hershey Medical Center. He was elected to the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences.

In 2003, after serving as interim CEO, Dr. Evarts became Senior Vice President and Vice Provost for Health Affairs and Chief Executive Officer of the University of Rochester Medical Center and Strong Health. In August of 2006, he became a Distinguished University Professor and Professor of Orthopaedics at the University of Rochester.

He serves as a Trustee of St. John Fisher College, the Colgate Rochester Crozer Divinity School, and Asbury First United Methodist Church.
