Portrait

Dr. Garfunkel is interested in primary care pediatrics, especially for children living in poverty and in pediatric resident training and education. To this end she is involved in projects that involve these topics. As the region III chair of CORNET (continuity clinic research network) a research network that evolved through the APA, similar to PROS, but looking at children served by continuity clinics, she participates in projects involving quality of care for patients who receive their primary care in continuity clinic. She was just appointed to the task force (leadership) of the Continuity SIG of the APA. In this role she will continue to collaborate with other continuity clinic directors involved in training needs of pediatric residents and health care needs of the population of children that these resident practices serve.

Locally she is looking at behavioral and mental health (BMH) training in residency, specifically BMH collaborative training in continuity clinic. She is also involved in resident evaluation and curriculum design in our training program.

As a primary care clinician and pediatric educator, Dr. Garfunkel realizes the importance of point of care clinical references for busy clinicians. This has resulted in the recently released 2007, second edition of the Pediatric Clinical Advisor, Mosby/Elsevier in which Dr. Garfunkel is the primary editor. She is also in the final stages of a project funded by the Commonwealth Fund in collaboration with the AAP as an editor of a 'how to' manual, (Bright Futures (BF) Preventive Manual) that will accompany the newly released BF Guidelines and soon to be released BF toolkit.
