Dr. Schaffer has been involved with several research projects assessing lead screening practices and seeking ways to accurately predict which children may be at risk for lead poisoning. His work includes efforts to improve the effectiveness of the CDC's lead risk assessment questionnaire in predicting which children have elevated lead levels, a nationwide survey of pediatricians to evaluate their lead screening practices and evaluation of parental views of lead screening.

In addition, Dr. Schaffer has been involved in several research projects dealing with immunization delivery, including surveys of physician policies and opinions regarding varicella and pneumococcal conjugate vaccines, an evaluation of physicians' adolescent immunization practices, a study looking at the use of an autodialer to remind and recall adolescents of the need to see their physician for immunizations and health supervision, and a study that evaluated the availability of hepatitis and HIV screening and hepatitis vaccination for high-risk adolescents who receive medical care at school health centers, teen clinics, STD clinics, family planning centers or who reside in youth correctional facilities.

Finally, Dr. Schaffer is presently directing a research study looking at the feasibility of vaccinating adolescents in settings like emergency departments, pharmacies and teen clinics that can complement the medical home. In addition, he is involved in research projects evaluating the feasibility of universal childhood influenza vaccination and evaluating the extent to which physicians have implemented the new adolescent immunization recommendations.
