Portrait

Dr. O'Keefe is an orthopaedic oncologist, or a surgeon who focuses his practice on people with tumors of bone, joints, and soft tissue. He also cares for patients with fragility fractures from osteoporosis, osteopenia, osteogenesis imperfecta, and low vitamin D. Because many patients entering Dr. O'Keefe's practice are experiencing the most challenging time of their life, his treatment goal is to provide the best quality of life possible and instill confidence in his patients that they are getting the best care possible.

Dr. O'Keefe earned his medical degree from Harvard Medical School and completed a residency in orthopaedic surgery at URMC. He then completed the Massachusetts General Hospital fellowship in orthopaedic oncology. Soon, he realized he could help more people if the causes of diseases of the skeleton were better understood. He earned a PhD in biochemistry at URMC while conducting research.

Dr. O'Keefe, a national leader in the field of orthopaedics, is the Chair of URMC's Department of Orthopaedics and Rehabilitation. He also serves as the Director of the Center for Musculoskeletal Research at URMC, a team of nearly 70 physicians, biomedical scientists, and graduate and post-doctoral students. This team remains the top orthopaedics research lab in the United States since 2006.
