RESEARCH INTERESTS: Dr. Friedman's research focuses on the health and health care of older persons, especially those with disabilities or depression. He is particularly interested in the effects of primary care affiliated nurse home visiting interventions on patient satisfaction and empowerment, health and disability status, and healthcare services use and expenditures. A second area of special interest is consumer-directed care for Medicare beneficiaries.
RESEARCH ACTIVITIES: Dr. Friedman's current research is focused in three areas: (1) major depression and its effects on healthcare services use by older persons, (2) emergency department use in later life, and (3) oral health in old age.
Dr. Friedman is the Principal Investigator of the Department's T32 Institutional Health Services Research Training Program funded by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ). He has extensive experience in the planning, implementation, and evaluation of three Medicare demonstration programs, and has been the Research Director of the Medicare Primary and Consumer-Directed Care Demonstration for the past ten years.
