Dr. Smith and colleagues conduct treatment studies in the Autism Spectrum Disorders Clinic, which collaborates with local schools on the provision of behavioral interventions. Studies have indicated that, when implemented intensively (more than 20 hours per week) and early (beginning prior to the age of five years), behavioral treatment enables many children with autism to make major developmental gains. However, this finding requires replication in rigorous, randomized clinical trials.
Dr. Smith is involved in a multisite clinical trial on early, intensive behavioral treatment for children with autism. In addition, with colleagues in the Autism Spectrum Disorders Clinic, he is evaluating the efficacy of this treatment when implemented in community settings, such as public schools.
