G. Edward Vates, MD, PhD

Dr. Edward Vates is the neurosurgeon co-director of the University of Rochester Multidisciplinary Neuroendcrinology Clinic, who graduated summa cum laude from Duke University, and obtained his medical degree from Cornell University Medical College. During his medical training, he obtained a PhD in neuroscience from the Rockefeller University. After medical school, Dr. Vates pursued training in neurosurgery at the University of California, San Francisco. During his neurosurgical residency, Dr. Vates was trained by Dr. Charles Wilson and Dr. Sandeep Kunwar in the techniques of transsphenoidal pituitary surgery, and participated in over 150 transsphenoidal surgeries. After completing his residency, Dr. Vates completed a fellowship in cerebrovascular and skull base surgery at the Brigham and Women's Hospital, Harvard Medical School, and then moved to Rochester to assume the position of Assistant Professor in the Department of Neurological Surgery, University of Rochester Medical Center. Since arriving in Rochester, Dr. Vates has performed surgery in over 120 patients with pituitary tumors. Together with Dr. Calvi, he has established the University of Rochester Multidisciplinary Neuroendcrinology Clinic as a regional referral center for patients with pituitary tumors.
