Portrait

Dr. Georas is Professor of Medicine and Environmental Medicine at the University of Rochester Medical Center, and Director of the Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine. From 1994-2006, Dr. Georas was a faculty member at Johns Hopkins University in the Pulmonary Division with a joint appointment in the Division of Allergy & Clinical Immunology, and Department of Environmental Health Sciences. He moved to the University of Rochester in 2006. Dr. Georas directs a research group investigating mechanisms of dendritic cell and T cell activation in allergic diseases. Current studies are aimed at defining molecular pathways by which allergens and particulate matter activate dendritic cells and influences allergen-specific immunity, with an emphasis on the role of oxidative stress and Nrf2-mediated signaling pathways in allergic innate immunity. A separate line of research is investigating how lysophosphatidic acid is generated in the allergic lung, and exploring the role of different LPA receptors in lung inflammation and immune responses. These studies should further our understanding of how inhaled pollutants and allergens affect respiratory immune responses with a long-term goal of alleviating the burden of asthma in vulnerable and susceptible human subjects.
