Stephen L. Kates, MD

Dr. Kates performs joint replacement and arthritis surgery of the hip, knee, and shoulder primarily for the middle aged and elderly patients. Additionally he cares for the elderly with fragility fractures. His practice is focused on providing excellent care to our aging population.

Dr. Kates earned his medical degree from Northwestern University Medical School and completed his orthopaedic surgery residency at the University of Rochester Medical Center. He has practiced orthopaedic surgery in Rochester, NY since 1989 and has developed an internationally recognized geriatric fracture program at Highland Hospital. His research interests are geriatric fractures and improving our system of care to the elderly with fractures. He has lectured extensively in North America, Europe, and Asia on geriatric fractures.

Dr. Kates has written medical journal articles on topics such as medical co-management of patients with fractures of the femur and osteoporosis. He is a board-certified orthopaedic surgeon and an Associate Professor of Orthopaedics and Rehabilitation. He is the director of the Geriatric Fracture Center at Highland Hospital and a member of URMC's Adult Reconstruction, Joint Replacement division.
