Dr. Hackney's research interests are in spontaneous preterm birth as well as hematologic changes and disorders during pregnancy, with a focus on preterm labor secondary to chorion-decidual bleeding. Both basic science and clinical research endeavors are actively pursued. In the laboratory, Dr. Hackney's interest is in the role of protease-activated receptors in gestational tissues and how these may instigate membrane rupture or labor in the setting of intrauterine bleeding. Clinical projects include evaluating placental thrombotic disorders and peripheral maternal markers of thrombin activation in the context of adverse obstetrical outcomes. Dr Hackney's interests also include the genetic basis of thrombotic and hemmorhagic events during pregnancy, including the exploration of coagulation cascade polymorphisms other then previously characterized thrombophilias.
