Dr. Randall is studying the development of local lymphoid tissues in the respiratory tract and determining how these tissues function to regulate respiratory immune responses. These tissues include the Bronchus Associated Lymphoid Tissue (BALT) and the Nasal Associated Lymphoid Tissue (NALT), which are found in the lungs and nasal passages respectively. Importantly, both BALT and NALT regulate different aspects of respiratory immunity in the context of allergy, asthma, respiratory infection and vaccination. Thus, Dr. Randall is defining the cellular and molecular mechanisms behind these differences.
