Holter and Event Loop Monitoring

Make Appointments & Get Care

What is Holter and Event Loop Monitoring?

Holter and event loop monitors help detect heart rhythm problems, such as a heartbeat that’s too fast, too slow or irregular.

  • Holter monitors are portable devices that track your heart rhythm continuously for several days. They record data that is then analyzed by your doctor.
  • Event loop monitors are portable devices that are worn for long periods of—up to several months. When you have a heart rhythm irregularity, like palpitations, data is sent to your doctor automatically from the device.

UR Medicine's Approach

UR Medicine offers the very latest technology for monitoring heart rhythm problems remotely.

Holter Monitors

  1. A technician attaches several electrodes to your chest.
  2. Information is recorded by a small device worn on a belt or shoulder strap.
  3. At the end of the testing period—typically one to two days—you return the monitor so the data can be analyzed.

Event Loop Monitors

  1. A technician attaches several electrodes to your chest.
  2. When you feel symptoms of a heart problem, such as palpitations, you press a button on the monitor.
  3. Information on your heart’s electrical activity is then automatically sent to your doctor for analysis.
  4. At the end of the testing period—typically one to four weeks—you return the monitor so additional data can be analyzed.

Trans-telephonic Monitoring

This technology can be used to monitor people with heart rhythm problems like arrhythmia, as well as patients with pacemakers. A call into our center allows technicians to monitor your heart’s electrical activity in real time.

The Cardiac Catheterization and Electrophysiology Laboratory offers advanced technology and expert technicians to perform the procedures for these monitors.

What Sets Us Apart?

Our Heart Rhythm Department is considered one of the world’s leaders in the treatment of heart rhythm disorders such as arrhythmia, bradycardia (slow heartbeat) and tachycardia (fast heartbeat).

Our researchers in the Heart Research Follow-up Program have created the world's only central repository of all Holter data allowing us to discover new ways to analyze heart rhythms and diagnose cardiac disease.

The Hereditary Arrhythmia Clinic at UR Medicine is one of only a handful of centers in worldwide that provides comprehensive management of patients who have hereditary rhythm disorders—as well as serving their families. Our clinic can provide treatments and recommendations including medication, defibrillator implantation and lifestyle modifications.
