George Hoyt Whipple, M.D.

Introduction

George Hoyt Whipple in his office, late 1930sGeorge Hoyt Whipple (1878-1976) was the founding dean of the University of Rochester School of Medicine & Dentistry and chairman of the Dept. of Pathology from 1921 to 1953. A scientist of international standing, Whipple shared the Nobel Prize in Medicine & Physiology in 1934 for his work on the treatment of anemia.

Most of the material in this collection focuses on Whipple's activities as a scientist and as an educator. The collection presents the work of his laboratory at the Hooper Foundation and at the University of Rochester, as well as his involvement in organizations outside the Medical Center. Although there is less material in the collection on the workings of the Dean's Office, it remains an invaluable resource on the work and times of a major figure in 20th-century pathology and American medical education.

The collection was brought together from several sources: personal correspondence formerly housed in the Whipple Museum; scientific correspondence and work data discovered in the summer of 1989 in two filing cabinets forgotten in a room adjacent to Dr. Whipple's office, miscellaneous materials long in possession of the Miner Library, several boxes of files transferred from the Dean's office in 1989, and later acquisitions such as the correspondence donated in the late 1990s by Whipple's colleague Roger Terry, M.D.. Processing of the bulk of this collection was completed in July 1989. Material added to the collection since then was processed in November 2017.

The Papers of George Hoyt Whipple are contained in eighty-six document boxes occupying fifty linear feet.

Biography

George Hoyt Whipple was born in Ashland, New Hampshire 28 August 1878. He received his A.B. from Yale University (1900) and his M.D. from Johns Hopkins (1905). Following graduation, Whipple remained at Hopkins in the pathology department headed by William Henry Welch, M.D. In 1907-08 Whipple travelled to Panama where he served as pathologist to the Ancon Hospital. Returning to Hopkins as Associate in Pathology (1909), Whipple remained in Baltimore until 1914, when he was appointed Director of the Hooper Foundation for Medical Research at the University of Calfornia and (later) Dean of the University of California Medical School (1920-1921). In 1921, at the urging of Abraham Flexner and University of Rochester President Rush Rhees, Whipple agreed to become Dean of the yet to be built medical school in Rochester, New York.

A full account of his work and achievements is contained in George Washington Corner's authoritative 1963 biography George Hoyt Whipple and His Friends. It may be supplemented by Dr. Whipple's own "Autobiographical Sketch" published in Perspectives in Biology & Medicine (1959, 2:253-289), and by Leon Miller's "George Hoyt Whipple (1878-1976)," published in the Biographical Memoirs of the National Academy of Sciences (1995, 66:371-393)..

Organization of the Collection

Scientific and External Correspondence (Boxes 1-28)

This series includes correspondence with colleagues and commercial laboratories regarding Whipple's scientific work. Of particular interest is his correspondence with the Eli Lilly Co. between 1928 and 1956 regarding liver extracts for the treatment of anemia (Boxes 6-7). This series also includes correspondence describing the response of the medical community to the anti-vivisection movement between 1921 and 1952 (Boxes 2-4). Material later added to the collection includes a collection of anti-vivisection literature collected by the Dean's office (Box 83).

This series also includes material on Whipple's involvement with the National Academy of Sciences (Boxes 13-14); documents and correspondence pertaining to the New York State Temporary Commission on the Need for a State University, 1946-1948 (Boxes 15-17); three boxes of Nobel prize correspondence (Boxes 18- 20); and minutes, correspondence, etc. from Whipple's long association with the Rockefeller Foundation and Rockfeller Institute (Boxes 22-24).

Laboratory Data (Boxes 29-47)

The bulk of this series is comprised of the record of Whipple's dog experiments (1916-1950), beginning with his work at the Hooper Foundation in San Francisco and continuing in Rochester.

Bound Reprints (17 volumes)

An apparently complete set of reprints from Whipple's laboratory at the Hooper Foundation and from the Dept. of Pathology at the University of Rochester School of Medicine & Dentistry.

University of Rochester files (Boxes 48-53/A)

These six boxes pertain directly to Whipple's role as Dean of the University of Rochester School of Medicine & Dentistry. Of particular interest are Whipple's correspondence with University of Rochester President Rush Rhees (Box 50) and with George Eastman (Box 48), whose interest and financial support played a crucial role in the formation of a medical school in Rochester. There is also a set of minutes of the Executive Hospital Committee for Strong Memorial Hospital (1935-42, 1953-55). Among the addenda to this series is a collection of correspondence, memos and reports on racial and religious discrimination in medical school admissions (Box 53-A).

Personal Correspondence (Boxes 54-72)

Whipple's personal correspondence comprises casual exchanges with colleagues and friends. However, topics are often brought up that pertain to professional matters. This correspondence is well worth examining, therefore, for casual asides on scientific and academic matters. On the other hand, Whipple's extensive correspondence with Johns Hopkins pediatrician Edwards A. Park is almost wholely devoted to their shared passion for fishing the Margaree River in Nova Scotia.

The personal correspondence series is divided into two sub-series: correspondence arranged chronologically, 1921-1976 (Boxes 54-65); and correspondence arranged alphabetically by correspondent (Boxes 66-72).

Memorabilia (Boxes 73-82)

Includes award certificates, medals, scrapbooks, photo albums, and other memorabilia.

Addenda (Boxes 83-86)

The material in these four boxes was added from various sources in the decade after the Whipple collection was initially processed. It includes a considerable amount of published anti-vivisection literature that supplements the correspondence in Boxes 2-4; an interesting collection of published literature on the question of compulsory health insurance; correspondence between George Washington Corner, M.D. and Roger Terry, M.D. regarding Corner's 1963 biography of Whipple; and correspondence between Whipple and Terry in the early 1970s. The Terry-Corner and Terry-Whipple correspondence were the gift of Roger Terry.
