Program Highlights

  • A mentored research experience at the University of Rochester that is typical of other competitive postdoctoral biomedical research opportunities. The research mentor and a 3-member advisory committee will sponsor and oversee the proposed research development program to ensure that the fellow receives the proper guidance and mentoring for a future independent research career. The postdoctoral fellow will devote 75%-effort to these activities.
  • A mentored practicum teaching experience at NTID/RIT to improve the fellow’s academic and teaching skills experience and additional mentored and/or didactic experiences to improve critical academic skills in team science leadership, communication, grant writing, and other “academic survival skills” to prosper in an academic environment. The postdoctoral fellow will devote 25%-effort to these activities.
  • The Research Career Development Program will take advantage of a well-developed Mentor-Scholar Development Program in the Rochester Clinical and Translational Science Award (CTSA) Program to provide team mentoring relevant to D/HH postdoctoral Scholars early in their career development. It will also leverage and enhance the novel “Mentor-the-Mentor” Program to enhance the competency of UR faculty to work with D/HH Scholars and facilitate ongoing institutional change at UR.
  • We will leverage our NIGMS supported R25 Bridges to the Doctorate for D/HH Master’s Students (also a collaboration between UR and NTID/RIT) to advance research and academic career development of Rochester Partnership Postdoctoral Scholars by giving them opportunities to serve as near-peer mentors to D/HH Bridge student’s completing UR-based research assistantships.

Mentor Training

A unique component of the Rochester Partnership K12 postdoctoral training program is training University of Rochester Research Mentors and lab personnel in Cross-Cultural Competency with Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing persons in four Competency Attributes:

  1. Cultural Knowledge
  2. Awareness
  3. Sensitivity
  4. Communication Competence (awareness and respect of communication needs, not competency in ASL).

Examples of Training Modules

  1. Communication needs during lab meetings
  2. How to organize a lab to meet safety requirements for D/HH persons
  3. Understanding language differences, body language and expressions of emotions in communicating with D/HH persons
  4. Etiquette for communicating with D/HH persons through an Interpreter or other access services personnel in meetings or classroom settings
  5. How to formally teach D/HH persons the knowledge and skills that hearing persons typically learn through the "informal curriculum" (hallway chats, lab banter, spontaneous peer-to-peer discussions).
  6. How to use voice recognition software that allows spoken words to be instantly turned into text, among other topics.
