Message from the Director

Jonathan W. Friedberg M.D.Welcome to the James P. Wilmot Cancer Center! Thanks to our talented and dedicated clinicians, researchers and staff, and the kind and generous support of our community, the Wilmot Cancer Center is the leading provider of cancer care and research in our region. I am honored to have a leadership role and truly privileged to work alongside faculty and staff who are uniformly, deeply committed to continuing our mission of becoming one of the best, most highly recognized cancer centers in the United States.

The Wilmot Cancer Center is organized around a multidisciplinary care model, which leading cancer experts believe is the gold standard in cancer care in the 21st Century. What does that mean? Our multidisciplinary, sub-specialized approach to cancer care ensures that each patient has a cross-section of cancer specialists and other clinicians, using specific knowledge of their specialized area of medicine, to formulate an exact diagnosis and best treatment plan – a personalized and dedicated team approach. When you trust your cancer care to us, it means that you will have access to physicians and staff who specialize in your particular disease – such as breast or prostate cancer – rather than a generalist who deals with many types of cancer.

Our model underscores our commitment to provide our patients with the most up-to-date information and available treatments, basing our recommendations on the best available evidence and our experience. We pride ourselves in being one of the only centers in Western New York offering this team approach to care. A key aspect of this approach to care involves clinical trials. We have over 150 treatment studies open incorporating novel therapeutic approaches to cancer care, and lead the region in clinical trial opportunities for our patients. Frequently, these promising approaches are available here years before FDA approval.

U.S. News and World Report recently recognized the Wilmot Cancer Center as the highest rated provider of cancer services in the greater Rochester area, and Becker’s Hospital Review named Wilmot one of the top 70 cancer centers in the nation. We have achieved ASCO QOPI certification, attesting to our focus on high quality ambulatory medical oncology care.

Historically, the word cancer has invoked dread and fear, and it is truly a horrible disease. I am heartened, however, by the great progress made in recent years – including research conducted at Wilmot – in discovering new, more effective therapies that effectively target cancer cells and spare healthy tissue. Our active basic and translational research program is internationally recognized, and the continued investment in research by our community will result in key discoveries with direct impact on the patients and families we serve.

Through this research, we understand the complexities of cancer better than we ever have, as is evidenced by improved survival rates and better quality of life for patients. All of us at the Wilmot Cancer Center stand ready to help and offer state-of-the-art, personalized care, in the most caring and compassionate patient-centered manner.

Again, thank you for visiting our website. It has been designed to provide helpful resources for those having to make important decisions about their care, or the care of loved ones. We hope you find it useful. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact us at 866-4-Wilmot (866-494-5668) or 585-276-4481, and your call will be forwarded to the appropriate source.

Sincerely,

Jonathan W. Friedberg M.D.
