Before Apheresis Treatment We want you to feel as comfortable as possible before, during, and after your apheresis treatment. Knowing what you can expect is a good first step toward greater understanding of your treatment. Members of our Apheresis Program team are happy to answer your questions. You can expect the treatment to last approximately two to four hours. You may eat before your treatment. Some good food choices are low fat yogurt, nonfat milk, cheese, pudding, salmon, almonds, cottage cheese, and even milk chocolate or ice cream. Foods that are high in calcium help decrease the side effects of the anticoagulant, a substance that prevents blood clots, which is used during treatment. Note: If you are scheduled to have a photopheresis procedure, avoid foods that are high in fat. Be sure to have your medications with you. If you are taking medication to control blood pressure, DO NOT take your medication before treatment. Please discuss your medications with the apheresis staff before your first treatment. Consider bringing reading material, tapes, headphones, CDs, DVDs, and other diversions to help you pass the time. Wi-Fi is available. Of course, a friend or loved one is always welcome. Use the bathroom immediately before treatment. Arrange to have someone drive you home after your first treatment. After your first treatment, you should be able to drive yourself home after your appointments. You will be asked to sign a consent form prior to treatment, at which time the procedure will be explained to you by a physician and you will have an opportunity to ask questions.
