Jill Crouthamel As a service scholar, I am required to volunteer 100 hours per semester at a location of my choice in Rochester. I chose to volunteer at Strong Memorial Hospital to gain first hand experience in a hospital setting. My first placement was at the Wilmot Cancer Center in the chemotherapy unit, and I fell in love with it right away. I have been there for the past two years. As a volunteer, I bring patients drinks and food, warm blankets, reading material, or anything else they need while receiving treatment. Our only concern is that they are as comfortable as possible. I could not imagine volunteering anywhere else. The relationships I have made with both patients and staff are irreplaceable. I cannot even begin to describe how rewarding it is to leave at the end of the day and know that I at least made someone smile. I began volunteering because I needed to, but now I do it because I want to. Volunteering has made me a better person, and I would not trade the experience for anything.
