About Me

David W. Dougherty, MD is a Senior Instructor of Medicine and Oncology and Chief Quality & Safety Officer for the Wilmot Cancer Center.

Dr. Dougherty received his Bachelor of Science, with honors, from Pennsylvania State University in University Park. He then went on to earn his medical degree from Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia.

From 2005 to 2009, Dr. Dougherty completed his residency in internal medicine and also served as chief resident and instructor at the Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center in Hershey. He completed a fellowship in medical oncology at the University of Rochester Medical Center in 2011.

Dr. Dougherty is the recipient of several prestigious awards, including the
W.G. Stuber Fellowship; the Arnold P. Gold Foundation Humanism and Excellence in Teaching Award; the Drs. Donald R. and Henry Pohl Prize for Professionalism and the Arnold R. Weitz Memorial Prize in Hematology. He has authored numerous publications and has participated in a wide variety of research studies related to urologic oncology, bone marrow transplantation, and Hodgkin lymphoma.

Dr. Dougherty is certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine and is licensed to practice medicine in the states of New York and Pennsylvania. He is a member of professional organizations including Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society, American Society of Clinical Oncology, American College of Physicians and American Board of Internal Medicine.

Dr. Dougherty's clinical focus is in treating patients with lung cancer and he has received additional training in this specialty at the Massachusetts General Hospital. In addition to his clinical efforts and seeing patients, Dr. Dougherty oversees and develops many of the Cancer Center's initiatives to improve quality of care and safety for our patients.
