We provide evaluation and treatment recommendations for children with cerebral palsy (CP) and other physical disabilities. We work with primary care providers to prevent and treat related health and behavior challenges.

Who Can We Help?

We see children with a wide range of disorders that affect walking and motor movements. We often evaluate children with significant delays in fine and gross motor skills who do not have a specific diagnosis.

Services and evaluations are provided by Developmental and Behavioral Pediatrics (formerly known as the Kirch Developmental Services Center) on Elmwood Avenue.

Spasticity Management Program

Our Spasticity Management Program is one part of our Kirch Motor Development Program. We provide assess and treat tight muscles that can make motor skills and daily living more difficult. During this monthly clinic, our pediatric nurse practitioner and physical therapist work with families to create individual treatment plans. Treatments may include physical therapy, oral medications, botulinum toxin (botox) injections, casting or referrals for surgical procedures. Our pediatric orthopaedist and pediatric occupational therapist support treatment planning and child participation.   

Collaborations

Pediatric Orthopaedics

The Pediatric Orthopaedics team works with us to monitor and treat bone and muscle issues in children with CP. They see children with CP in the pediatric orthopaedic offices on Westfall Road and in our Kirch Developmental Services Center.

Physical Therapy

In addition to the evaluation services, pediatric physical therapists are available in the outpatient setting to provide outpatient evaluation and intense and targeted therapy programs for children and teens. These programs target specific home and community goals. For example, they may work with a child after surgery to regain strength or improve walking skills. They can also work with children on independent daily living skills (feeding, dressing and bathing needs) and evaluate for equipment like wheelchairs.

Pediatric Urology

Our pediatric urologists see children both in our Kirch Developmental Services Center and in their off-site offices. They monitor bladder and kidney problems that are common in children with spina bifida and other spinal cord injuries. They can also help families develop a toilet training program based on the child’s ability and bladder’s function.

Occupational Therapy

Our pediatric occupational therapists have special skills for working with children with motor disabilities. They are part of our service team and are also available in the outpatient setting. They can evaluate fine motor skills, handwriting, daily living skills, sensory processing, and adaptive equipment needs. They provide ongoing treatment programs to target specific home and community goals such as self-feeding, handwriting, sensory regulation, and daily living/self-care skills.
