Pediatric Cardiac Care Center

Philosophy

Our goal is to maintain your comfort and allow you to stay with your child anytime you wish, including during procedures. However, depending on your child’s urgent medical needs, temporary restriction may be necessary.

Policy

  • Siblings older than 3 may visit during normal visiting hours, 11:00 a.m.-8:00 p.m., under the following conditions:
    • Immunization records must be supplied for children less than 5 years of age.
    • Must be supervised at all times.
  • Visitors are limited to parents/guardians plus two other visitors. A maximum of four people are allowed in the patient's room at any given time.
  • All visitors should check in with the secretary or nurse before going into a patient room.
  • During certain patient care, visitors may be asked to kindly step out to the family waiting room to allow for privacy while we provide quality patient care.
  • Visitors must wait in the family lounge located at the entrance of the unit.
  • Visitors should not wait outside patient rooms or in hallways.
  • Visiting can be restricted if families fail to follow our visitation policy.
  • To help to keep our patients safe and free of infection, all visitors should wash hands before entering and leaving a patient’s room. Hand hygiene dispensers are conveniently posted throughout the unit.
  • Due to allergies latex balloons are not permitted in the hospital. Mylar balloons may be taped to the outside of your child’s door for them to enjoy through the window.
  • Live plants and flowers should be left at the front desk or taken home as they cannot be kept in the rooms.
  • Bathrooms in patient rooms are for patient use only. Public bathrooms are located in the patient family waiting room.
  • When a patient is most critical, and not able to eat, we ask that food is kept out of the room. During this time, families can eat in the family waiting room. When a patient it able to eat, parents are allowed to eat at the bedside.
  • Sleeping arrangements can be made for one parent/guardian in the patient room if your child is stable. No one under the age of 18 may sleep at the bedside. If choosing to sleep in the room, please expect many interruptions due to the frequency of assessments and care being provided. Many sleeping options are available for patient’s families. Please speak to your nurse or the social worker if interested.

Additional Cardiac Suite Guidelines

If your child is located in the four-room Cardiac Suite area, additional guidelines apply.

  • Parents and visitors of all patients will be asked to leave the suite during:
    • Any admission into the cardiac suite.
    • Any surgical procedure in the cardiac suite.
    • Any unexpected event in the cardiac suite that deserves focused attention.
  • Siblings are permitted to brief supervised visits with patients while in the suite.
  • Due to the acuity of patients in the suite, it is not recommended that parents sleep at the bedside while in the cardiac suite.
