Holiday Safety Tips

Late December is a wonderful, magical time for children. All of the colored lights, delicious foods, and festive spirits gets the child in all of us excited. Keep your child safe by being aware of the potential dangers presented by the holiday season.

  • Lights: Make sure Christmas tree lights and all decorative lighting is in good condition and is plugged in safely. Do not leave children unsupervised near these lights.
  • Candles: Do not leave candles or matches within a child's reach.
  • Choking Hazards: Remove and/or supervise your child around potential choking hazards in your home and homes you visit. The possibilities are endless, including beads, ornaments, gift wrapping, etc. Look at your home and homes you visit in from your child's perspective.
  • Breakables: Keep breakable items out of your child's reach, or teach them what is okay to touch and what should be looked at and not touched.
  • Shopping: Teach your child his or her parents' or guardians' full names (not just "Mommy" or "Daddy") and to go to a security guard or store clerk if you become separated.
