CME Online Module Supporting Complex Care: Cystic Fibrosis

The goal of this online module series (total time: 2.5 hours) about Cystic Fibrosis (CF) is to give providers a broad understanding of the disease as well as the latest recommendations in evidence-based disease management. Topics include:

  • basic genetics and pathophysiology of Cystic Fibrosis
  • identification of the pulmonary and non-pulmonary manifestations of Cystic Fibrosis
  • principles of treatment and common medications used in Cystic Fibrosis
  • the basic definition of a pulmonary exacerbation and the three main treatment goals during an inpatient admission
  • recognizing organ systems involved in CF and possible complications
  • the rationale for obtaining sputum cultures for identification and sensitivity testing in CF patients 
  • the microbiology of CF and the appropriate treatment of the bacteria which are considered pathogenic in Cystic Fibrosis
  • recognizing some of the less typical organisms seen on sputum culture and recognize which of those need special discussion with the CF team
  • review of methods for airway clearance and the importance of active patient engagement in related decision making
  • the importance of nutrition and the role that pancreatic enzymes play in the nutritional status of CF patients
  • the role of non-invasive ventilation in some patients with CF
  • the role that exercise plays in airway clearance and overall health in CF
  • observation of airway clearance techniques being done on a CF patient
