The Challenge

Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing (D/HH) individuals remain underrepresented among biomedical researchers.

While there have been measures toward improving the training of D/HH scientists, there is still a need for specialized accommodations to facilitate communication between deaf and hearing individuals, improved access to D/HH peers and role models, and an overall more aggressive approach to address challenges faces by D/HH individuals.

By creating a new, centralized program (“hub”) we can overcome disparities faced by D/HH individuals in accessing and successfully navigating education and career development programs so that they can have productive careers as research scientists in NIH-related disciplines.
