Denise Thew, Ph.D.
Denise Thew received her Bachelors degree in Psychology with honors from the College of St. Mary, a Masters in Counseling degree from the University of North Dakota, and a doctorate in Counseling Psychology from the University of North Dakota. She also completed her pre-doctoral internship here at the Deaf Wellness Center. She joined the DWC staff, where she provides clinical services and also recently became a post-doctoral fellow at the National Center for Deaf Health Research, also part of the University of Rochester Medical Center.
Dr. Thew’s dissertation explored the gray areas of multiple relationships that Deaf therapists face when providing services to the Deaf community, and she developed a new ethical decision-making model that might become widely distributed for other therapists or professions working in other small communities (e.g., LGBT, veterans, etc.). As a post-doctoral fellow, her primary focus will be career development in scientific research and academic aptitudes. She will continue to provide psychotherapy services (individual, couples, family and group) at the Deaf Wellness Center.
