Sign Language Interpreting Internships

The Deaf Wellness Center (DWC) provides practicum and internship training opportunities for sign language interpreters, either students who are currently enrolled in an interpreter preparation program (IPP) or working interpreters. The DWC is authorized by the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf as a provider of continuing education credits and independent study credits. IPP students who wish to receive independent study or other course credit from their college or university for practicum or internship training at the DWC should contact the appropriate faculty or administrator in your IPP to discuss this possibility. Interpreter trainees at the DWC are not paid; this is a volunteer opportunity. Interpreter trainees can experience a wide variety of work tasks and settings at the University of Rochester Medical Center, including interpreting with deaf psychiatric patients, an enormous variety of deaf medical patients, deaf psychologists and social workers, and other deaf healthcare professionals. Interpreting research learning opportunities also are available. There is no particular schedule or curriculum established for interpreting practica and internships. Each learning situation is individually arranged.
