Antonia Kolokythas, DDS, MSc, MSed, FACS

Department Chair and Program Director, EIOH Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery

Dr. KolokythasDr. Antonia Kolokythas, DDS, MSc, MSed, FACS, joined the University of Rochester and EIOH from the University of Illinois at Chicago’s College of Dentistry, where worked since 2009, most recently as an associate professor, program director, and director of research in the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. After earning a dental degree at the University of Thessaloniki in Greece, completed residency training in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at the University of Illinois at Chicago, followed by two surgical fellowships in Head and Neck-Maxillofacial oncology and Reconstruction at the University of Maryland at Baltimore and the University of California at San Francisco. Immediately after the fellowship training returned to the University of Illinois as full time faculty in the tenure track. Within six years was promoted to the rank of Associate professor with tenure. During the tenure at UIC, earned a U.S. Dental Degree and a Master of Science in Oral Science. Primary research interest is in oral cancer specifically in early detection and diagnosis. Oral cancer and maxillofacial pathology is the primary focus of publications in peer reviewed journals, book chapter contributions, presentations at national and international scientific meetings. Remain active in regional and national professional organizations, and serve on the editorial boards of the Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, the official journal of the OMFS specialty, the Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Research and the Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Cases. In 2008 was awarded the Faculty Education Development Award (FEDA) from the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons Foundation. In 2014 received the Faculty Research Award and the DuBrul Faculty Achievement Award at the University of Illinois at Chicago’s College of Dentistry, and was named one of the Top 25 Women in Dentistry in Dental Products Report. The focus of clinical practice is in oral head and neck cancer, maxillofacial pathology and reconstruction. Named Department Chair and Program Director of the University of Rochester-EIOH Advanced Education OMFS Residency Training Program in October of 2015. Was also conducted to the American College of Surgeons in 2015. Obtained a second  Master’s degree in Health Professions Education at the Warner School of Education at the University of Rochester in 2019. Also completed the Executive Leadership in Academic Medicine (ELAM) fellowship program at Drexel University in 2019. Dr. Kolokythas serves on an Examiner in the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (ABOMS) since 2017 and as Content Expert in Reconstruction for ABOMS.

Dr. VorassiDr. John Vorrasi, DDS
Assistant Professor

Dr. Vorrasi joins Eastman Institute for Oral Health as a native Rochesterian growing up in Brighton. His undergrad education was completed at Tufts University where he was Cum Laude in Chemical Engineering and dental school at SUNY Buffalo in 2008 where he graduated Magna Cum Laude. Dr. Vorrasi traveled to University of Maryland Medical Center to complete his certificate in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery in 2013 focusing on orthognathic surgery or corrective jaw surgery for facial deformities and temporomandibular joint (TMJ) surgery. 

Dr. Vorrasi has been on staff at Christiana Care Health System, in Delaware, as Program Director for the OMS residency program as well as associate director of research and simulation training. His interests include orthognathic surgery, TMJ surgery and reconstruction, dental implants, dentoalveolar surgery, facial reconstruction, and trauma. He has numerous publications including Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, OMS Knowledge Update- Orthognathic Surgery, and 2015 edition of Atlas of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. He is co-recipient of Geistlich Osteoscience Research grant for tissue engineering in collaboration with the University of Delaware and 2014 recipient of Christiana Care’s “Rising Star” faculty award. John has traveled to San Pedro Sula, Honduras with the “New Faces for Honduras” mission trip performing full scope maxillofacial surgery.

Dr. Vorrasi is a diplomate of the American Board of OMS, fellow of the American Association of OMS, member of Omicron Kappa Upsilon (OKU) dental honor society, and recently inducted into the American Society of TMJ Surgeons.

Dr. GangwaniPooja Gangwani, DDS, MPH
Assistant Professor

Dr. Pooja Gangwani is an Assistant Professor of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry/Eastman Institute for Oral Health. Dr. Gangwani earned her Dental Degree from New York University College of Dentistry where she was inducted in the Omicron Kappa Upsilon (OKU) dental honor society. She completed an Internship in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital. She received her Advanced Training in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at St. Joseph's University Medical Center.

She performs wisdom teeth extraction, bone grafting procedures, dental implant reconstruction, corrective jaw surgery and reconstructive surgery after facial trauma. Dr. Gangwani spends a great deal of time educating her patients and providing treatment options, thus helping them make informed decisions about their own health. She is passionate about delivering personalized patient care before, during and after surgery.

Dr. Gangwani also holds a Master's Degree in Public Health Epidemiology from the University of North Texas Health Science Center. She has a particular interest in clinical research and has served as an author of book chapters and articles in peer-reviewed journals. She enjoys educating residents and finds it extremely rewarding.

Dr. Lee PollanLee D. Pollan, DMD, MS
Professor

  • Lee D Pollan, D.M.D., M.S. is a 1971 graduate of the University of Pittsburgh School of Dental Medicine. He is a graduate of the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery residency program at Georgetown University Medical Center and earned a Masters of Science degree from Georgetown University in 1974.

    He currently practices the contemporary scope of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery in Rochester New York. He is a Clinical Associate Professor of Dentistry and Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry, Strong Memorial Hospital, and the Eastman Institute for Oral Health. He is a Diplomat of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. Dr. Pollan has served as the Residency Program Director at the University of Rochester, and he currently serves as the Interim Chair of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.

    Dr Pollan has lectured on local, state, national, and international programs. His areas of interest include anesthesia issues, TMD management, orthognathic surgery, chronic obstructive sleep apnea and dento-alveolar surgery.

    Dr. Pollan has served on the Board of Trustees of the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons (AAOMS). He was elected President of the AAOMS in 2007-2008. He currently serves as the Treasurer of the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Foundation. Dr. Pollan also has been appointed to the Examination Committee of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.
