Dr. Jack Caton Awarded Master Clinician
Dr. Jack Caton has received the 2017 Master Clinician Award from the American Academy of Periodontology.
Dr. Caton, chair and program director of UR Medicine’s Eastman Institute for Oral Health’s Periodontics Department, was given the award for his demonstrated clinical excellence in the periodontal specialty and for willingly passing his wisdom and experience on to others.
As a researcher, educator, and practitioner, Dr. Caton has been honored for his many accomplishments, including receiving the Distinguished Service Award in 2016, the Outstanding Periodontal Educator in 2009, the Norton M. Ross Award for excellence in clinical research in 2008, the AAP Gold Medalist in 2004 and the William J. Gies Award in 1993.
In a periodontics career that spans nearly 45 years, Dr. Caton has made an indelible impact on the scientific advancement of the specialty, with extensive research that has been published in more than 120 scientific articles and book chapters.
“His pioneering research work in periodontal wound healing provided the clinical as well as histological basis for evaluating and understanding periodontal regenerative procedures,” says AAP Secretary/Treasurer Dr. Bryan Frantz, citing Dr. Caton’s contributions to the development of the first biodegradable barrier membrane and of Periostat, the first dentistry drug approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
Dr. Caton’s service to the AAP includes more than 30 years of participation on various committees, task forces, and on the Board of Trustees, including as the Academy’ s president from 1999 to 2000. He has also served as president of the AAP Foundation and chairman of the American Board of Periodontology. Dr. Caton is currently the co-chair of the 2017 World Workshop on the Classification of Periodontal and Peri-Implant Diseases. For five years, he was active on the American Dental Associations Commission on Dental Accreditation, which sets and administers the standards of dental training programs across the country.
