Dr. William Bowen Receives Distinguished Mentoring Award
The American Association for Dental Research named William H. Bowen the 2015 recipient of its Irwin D. Mandel Distinguished Mentoring Award during its annual meeting this week.
Dr. Bowen is professor emeritus at the University of Rochester Medical Center's Departments of Microbiology and Immunology, Environmental Medicine, and Center for Oral Biology, which is part of Eastman Institute for Oral Health.
The AADR Irwin D. Mandel Distinguished Mentoring Award was established to provide national recognition for outstanding efforts to foster and promote research training and career development of students, trainees and junior faculty.
Dr. Bowen has been an outstanding mentor during the entirety of his 50-plus years as an exemplary academician, educator and researcher. He consistently displays an extraordinary ability to bring out the best in others by promoting curiosity, creativity, critical thinking, and above all, personal and scientific integrity.
His tireless and enthusiastic efforts have helped countless trainees, faculty and colleagues to conceptualize and realize their aspirations and achieve success in academic, government and corporate settings.
Dr. Bowen has received many accolades and recognition for his research and served as the president of the IADR for the 1990-91 term. Through the AADR Irwin D. Mandel Distinguished Mentoring Award he will be honored for his extensive experience and devotion to the mentoring and training of the next generation of scientists. The award consists of a plaque and a monetary award of $1,000.
He received his B.D.S. and D.Sc. from the National University of Ireland, Galway; his M.Sc. from the University of Rochester, N.Y., USA; and his Ph.D. from the University of London, England.
The American Association for Dental Research, headquartered in Alexandria, Va., is a nonprofit organization with nearly 3,400 members in the United States. Its mission is: (1) to advance research and increase knowledge for the improvement of oral health; (2) to support and represent the oral health research community; and (3) to facilitate the communication and application of research findings. AADR is the largest Division of the International Association for Dental Research.
