Accent Modification

What are accents?

Accents are a natural part of spoken language. Having an accent, is not a speech, language or communication disorder. Accents are a unique way groups of individuals speak the same language sounds.  Accents are influenced by your background and where you are from.

What is accent modification?

Accent modification or accent reduction involves changing how you say sounds and words.  An individual might seek out accent modification services to improve the clarity of their speech so that others can better understand them. Accent modification focuses on changing speech stress, intonation and rhythm and reducing sound distortions.

Speech-Language Pathology Evaluation & Therapy

The University of Rochester Department of Speech Pathology does not offer accent modification services at this time.
