In the context of a one-year fellowship, the fellows are encouraged but not required to participate in a research project. The Del Monte Neuroscience Institute is one of the preeminent institutions dedicated to the study of the brain, with the Department of Neurology alone receiving $21.1 million in NIH research support in 2017. The Institute has a dedicated 3T magnet for research purposes and has been used for projects such as traumatic brain injury, Alzheimer Disease, and translation brain mapping. The Medical Center also clinically operates a dual energy CT and PET MR scanner.
The fellows are required to submit one abstract to a national conference. The Department will provide financial support and time for the fellows to attend at least one conference. Additional national conferences may also be supported if the fellows submit work to more than one conference.
