Welcome from Program Director Suzanne Karan, M.D. I was in your shoes 15 years ago—applying to a variety of Anesthesiology Residencies across the country. Arriving in Rochester from Brooklyn, New York, I was immediately struck by the lack of traffic, the low cost of living, the fresh air…and the friendliness. (You thought I was going to say snow!) We take pride in being nice. Residency can be very demanding and you may feel very vulnerable at times. Our mission is to provide the infrastructure to develop you to your fullest potential: be that an academic anesthesiologist, a clinician-scientist or just the most up to date private practitioner. But we also understand that you have lives outside of residency: families, hobbies, the need to just unwind. Don’t get me wrong—our residents work hard. On average, they work about 65 hours a week. They complete approximately 2-4 times the required caseloads in all categories. They score above the national average on the boards each year. But they also grow their families, get together for outings, and pursue lifelong interests. What do we look for in an applicant? We are not looking to recruit 17 clones a year. Each of you will bring unique talents and skills to our specialty. But we do appreciate some commonalities in your characters. So, besides being nice and well-rounded and normal... You are a team player. You are self-motivated to learn. You are enthusiastic. You have proven that you can process information and spit it back. You seek out evaluations of your performance and look for ways to improve. And you can picture yourself living your life for three or four or more years in sunny Rochester! I have found Rochester to be a wonderful place to grow professionally and personally. I am surrounded by wonderful mentors both within and outside our department. I find each day to be a new challenge—it is certainly never boring in our operating rooms. Our residents are bright, highly competent, and exuberant. I truly enjoy working with each one of them. That is why I decided to stay here after my training. I look forward to sharing what I have found with you.
