Residency Research Track

UR Clinical & Translational Science Institute (CTSI)

Success as a clinician scientist in today’s highly competitive funding environment necessitates requires carefully crafted preparation. The University of Rochester Department of Anesthesiology has developed a research curriculum that takes advantage of the many education and career development options offered  by the Clinical and Translational Science Institute. Our research track offers a certificate or a Master’s degree in Clinical Investigation that is CEPH accredited. The degree program includes 3 semesters in which course work is completed during residency with a mentored research project at the end. We support this process by providing resources for: protocol development, IRB approval, clinical research implementation, data collection and analysis, presentation and publication.

Sample Curriculum

 The school of medicine and dentistry offers Master’s degree in Clinical Investigation that is CEPH accredited. It has 3 semesters: Fall, Spring, and Summer. Course work is completed in three years with a mentored research project at the end.

Masters Required Courses

  • PM 410* Introduction to Data Management & Analysis Using SAS (Spring & Summer) 3 credits
  • PM 415 Principles of Epidemiology (Fall)3 credits
  • PM 438 Practical Skills in Grant Writing (Spring) 3 credits
  • IND 503 Ethics in Professional Integrity-Clinical (Fall) 1 credit
  • BST 463 Introduction to Biostatistics (Fall) 4 credits
  • BST 465 Design of Clinical Trials (Spring) 4 credits

Plus one of the following

  • PM 413 Field Epidemiology (Spring) 3 credits

OR

  • PM 416 Advanced Epi Methods (Fall) 3 credits

Specialization Course

  • Masters Research Project/Paper (6 credits)

Electives

Electives can be tailored towards individuals research focus and are identified accordingly.

  • 6 additional credits of graduate coursework

Total credits required: 33

Year 1 CBY 1 Intern Schedule

  • Year 1 CBY 1 Intern Rotations over 3-6 months and Anesthesiology Rotations over 6-9 months
  • 6 credits PM 410 and PM 401 Summer
  • 3 credits IND 501 Fall

Year 2-CA 1 Schedule

  • Year 2-CA 1 anesthesiology rotations
  • 3 credits BST 465 Spring
  • 3 credits Elective Summer
  • 3 Credits PM 415 Fall

Year 3-CA 2 Schedule

  • Year 3-CA 2 anesthesiology rotations
