Procedure Clinic

Weekly procedure clinics at Highland Family Medicine and Brown Square provide opportunities to focus on procedural medicine with a variety of dermatologic and musculoskeletal procedures. Sessions are supervised by family medicine attendings experienced in office procedures.

Procedure Teaching Core Workshops

Hands-on supervised workshops are held each year during the Thursday afternoon didactic session. The procedures practiced are the ones provided in our clinics. These include skin biopsy, suturing, nail removal, cyst/lipoma removal, joint injection, POCUS, IUD insertion, Nexplanon insertion, endometrial biopsy, and colposcopy. Training in circumcision is available during the obstetrics rotation and with each resident’s continuity deliveries. Training in obstetric ultrasound is an integrated part of the Obstetrics rotation.

GYN Procedure Clinic

Residents have the opportunity to learn to do colposcopies, IUD insertions, and endometrial biopsies in the Colposcopy/GYN Procedure Clinic held one afternoon each week. The clinic is staffed by experienced family medicine faculty. Given the large numbers of female patients in most primary care practices, family physicians that are able to do these procedures are in high demand and are able to offer a valuable service to their patients.

Abortion Training

Medication abortions are provided to patients at Highland Family Medicine under the guidance of multiple faculty members trained and experienced in this area. Residents are also able to work at Planned Parenthood with family medicine faculty who work there part-time and perform surgical abortion. Residents who feel that this experience is not congruent with their personal beliefs and views may opt out and are scheduled for office and teaching instead.

OMT Clinic

The clinical practice at Highland Family Medicine has a long history of providing osteopathic manipulative medicine to patients. Under the direct guidance of DO faculty, both DO and MD residents have participated in these sessions. DO residents have been able to further refine their technique and several MD residents have learned enough OMM to provide some basic aspects of care to their patients.
