Welcome to the Department of Neurology of the University of Rochester School of Medicine & Dentistry! Rochester Neurology has a long tradition as being one of the premier training programs in the world. First established by Dr. Robert Joynt in 1966, the neurology training programs have always been the heart and soul of the Department. I know first-hand, as I was a resident here from 1990-1993 and those years were one of the most enjoyable of my life. The reasons for this success still exist.

Outstanding Leadership

We have faculty who are passionate about teaching and education. This all starts with the Program Directors of our Adult and Child Residency Programs (Drs. Colleen Tomcik and Rob Stone), along with their Associate Program Directors (Drs. Chris Tarolli, Jennifer Marsella, Jennifer Nguyen, Bo Lee). Dr. Ralph Jozefowicz, the visionary pioneer who catapulted our educational programs to national prominence, continues to teach and mentor students, residents, and faculty as our Associate Chair for Education. They all possess a command of teaching neurology that is unparalleled and their enthusiasm is infectious. You have to see it to believe it and I know legions of graduates from the program would agree.

Curricular Innovation

Our teaching programs are always thinking ahead. We recently revamped our educational curriculum to a half-day block schedule where all residents spend Wednesday afternoons together for teaching. The curriculum includes many different teaching approaches to accommodate different style of learning and to stimulate collaborative growth. It focuses less on traditional lectures and more on active approaches to learning.

Mentors in all Fields for all Careers

We have over 120 faculty across 13 divisions who oversee 12 clinical fellowships, and a NINDS-funded T32 Training Program in Experimental Neurotherapeutics. Whether your goal is to become a master clinician, a revered teacher, or a cutting-edge physician-scientist, we have the environment to develop a personalized plan for your professional development. All of our faculty view mentorship as one of our highest priorities.

Commitment to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion

I, along with our education leadership and entire faculty, are committed to diversity, equity, and inclusion and to ensuring a safe and collegial work environment for everyone. We believe that a diverse workforce and inclusive workplace culture enhances the performance of our Department and our ability to fulfill our important missions. The Department is committed to fostering and supporting an environment inclusive of people regardless of their race, ethnicity, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, socio-economic status, marital status, age, physical abilities, political affiliation, religious beliefs, or any other non-merit fact, so that all employees feel included, equally valued and supported.

So welcome to our Department. We have much to accomplish to harmonize and re-imagine clinical care, research and teaching to improve the health of our patients and families. There has never been a more exciting time in neurology, and we hope that you will consider joining us on this exciting journey.
