Weekly Teaching Schedule

Conferences

Recurring educational conferences are the didactic complement to direct patient care and teaching during rounds. Residents attend daily conferences while on most inpatient, outpatient, and elective rotations. Morning conferences are held at both educational sites, while noon conference is delivered at Golisano Children’s Hospital and teleconferenced at Rochester General Hospital.

• Intern/Senior Report: Small group, patient-based conferences presented by residents. A chief resident facilitates discussion focused on clinical reasoning. A faculty member aids in facilitation and shares expertise. Interns and seniors have separate sessions to tailor learning to each group’s needs.
• Morning Report: An interactive, patient-based conference facilitated by chief residents focusing on clinical reasoning. Breakout groups include a mix of students, residents, and faculty, with participation encouraged from every level of learner. Board review questions are often incorporated to enhance learning engagement and retention.
• Evidence-Based Medicine (EBM) Conference: During the summer months, chief residents, with specialized training in EBM, present a curriculum that focuses on determining the quality and applicability of evidence and practicing translation of evidence to patient care.
• Grand Rounds: A departmental conference including both local and national speakers.
• Noon Conference: A 15-month curriculum based on exam specifications by the American Board of Pediatrics and delivered by faculty experts in that content area.
• Special Noon Conference Series: Recurring special topics that occur monthly.
  • Advocacy: Highlights local and national advocacy efforts and opportunities.
  • Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) in Healthcare: Devoted to DEI topics with a particular emphasis on anti-racism, LGBTQ+, and health equity.
  • Leadership Chats: An opportunity for program leadership to communicate updates to residents and for residents to provide direct feedback to program leadership to foster continuous program improvement. The program direcote and chief residents have separate sessions monthly.
  • M&M Conference: 1) Hospital-wide and interprofessional exploration of challenging situations; 2) Resident-only and resident-led to consider the specific reident context around difficult patient situations, support resilience in the moment, and identify system issues.
  • Med-Peds Noon Conference: Held for pediatric, internal medicine, and med-peds residents, these conferences address a medical topic affecting both patient populations such as transitioning adolescents with chronic disease.

Other Educational Activities

• Coaching Program: A team of specially-trained psychologists directly observe residents in different settings to provide individualized feedback on professionalism and interpersonal communication skills.
• Patient Safety and Quality Improvement (QI): Self-directed modules on patient safety and quality improvement that result in Basic Certification in Quality and Safety.This program serves as the foundation for a required interprofessional QI project.
• Journal Club: Resident-led discussions with faculty support that critically appraise pediatric journal articles relevant to patient care.
• Simulation: Twice monthly high-fidelity multidisciplinary simulations. Additional simulations occur in the NICU and Skills Block.
