Resident Research

Although it is not required, we encourage all residents to participate in supervised independent research. Residents who wish to present at a national meeting may apply for up to $500 in departmental funding. They may also use their annual professional stipend to fund attendance at national meetings.

For residency applicants that want to do research during residency and then continue afterward, there is a mentored research pathway. Planning begins after matching here and before beginning.  The PGY-1 year can include attendance at a pertinent research conference and the creation of a mentored poster suitable for national presentation. The PGY-2 year includes the development of an Institutional Review Board (IRB) protocol for research that would begin before or by PGY-3. The PGY-3 & 4 years have substantial research time. Participants can build research skills through coursework, and attend the monthly Journal Club with Department researchers across all 4 years.   Those in the research pathway must show solid clinical skills to stay in the pathway.
