Dean’s Lecture Series Presents: Huda Yahya Zoghbi, MD

The Dean’s Lecture Series is intended to showcase high-caliber research and high-impact topics in clinical medicine and related biomedical fields. The presentations will be targeted to a broad audience of investigators and trainees from multiple areas of clinical medicine, public health, and life science research, as well as for interested members of the university community and the public at large. The George D. and Freida B. Abraham Foundation is sponsoring this series.

5th Annual Presentation Skills Workshop: Presented by Dr. Alan Grossfield

Wed August 10th | 1:00pm – 4:00pm | Natapow Conference Room (1-9545)

Attendees will learn principles for designing effective scientific talks, with particular emphasis on clear visual communication. The content is aimed primarily at students, but postdocs, fellows, techs, faculty, and staff members are also welcome. All attendees should be prepared to share a set of slides from a scientific talk, since a portion of the workshop will involve small-group discussion of others’ presentations.

Space is limited, so please reserve your spot. Light refreshments will be served.

All attendees will be required to wear a mask throughout.

  • Learn about the purpose of informational interviews and the benefits of utilizing them to explore and learn about contacts at the U of R, SMD labs, career options, and employers.
  • Explore ways to research potential contacts to interview and how to arrange an informational interview.
  • Develop informational interview questions that can help you learn about an individual’s educational or career experience.
  • Gain knowledge about additional skills that can be strengthened from completing an informational interview.
  • Prepare and practice informational interviews with participants and upper-level graduate students from SMD graduate programs.

 I-Corps@NCATS Regional Short Course Beginning October 17, 2022 (5 Weeks)

We are excited to share with you that the University of Rochester (UR) is hosting the I-Corps@NCATS Regional Short Course this fall, which is specifically designed for biomedical scientists, clinician scientists, and engineers to provide them with a new approach to accelerate the translation of their discoveries from the lab to clinical practice. This program, supported by the NIH National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences (NCATS), is based on National Science Foundation’s Innovation Corps (I-Corps™) program which is the premier federally funded innovation and commercialization training in the U.S.

The program will kick off with orientation the week of October 17th and will run for 5 weeks.  All sessions will be held virtually over zoom.  The attached flyer provides the program details.  Apply online by October 3rd at

The I-Corps@NCATS Regional Short Course is meant for teams of faculty, postdocs, and students with biomedical innovations or ideas and is free to participants.  Course graduates receive National Science Foundation (NSF) lineage and can apply to other NSF grant awards, including the National I-Corps Team program, which carries a grant award up to $50,000. Previous NSF funding is not required to apply.

2022-2023 SBIR/STTR Grant Writing Support

 The University of Rochester is providing an opportunity for grant writing/consulting assistance to UR researchers that are planning to partner with a small business to develop and submit a Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) or Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) proposal.

Put Down the Paper! Help Test New Electronic Lab Notebook Software

A project is underway to select electronic laboratory notebook (ELN) software for use at the University of Rochester. All University students, faculty, researchers, and staff are invited to help evaluate two ELNs (LabArchives and RSpace). Volunteers will have the opportunity to participate in training, demonstrations and interviews; fill out online questionnaires; and share your insights. Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Trainee Support Group

Potential activities include:

  • Social gatherings with Asian food and Asian games (introducing cultural heritage of diverse Asian sub-cultures, looking for people interested in doing so),
  • Seminars with AAPI faculty members to hear how they navigate implicit bias and racism in academia and to perhaps connect AAPI trainees to AAPI faculty members,
  • Support groups,
  • Cultural events.

Invitation to the Postdoctoral Association (PDA) Monthly Meeting

Upcoming Events With the National Postdoctoral Association:

Postdoc Preview (Sept. 15-17, 2022)

Postdoc Preview is a three-day competitive program that provides selected applicants the opportunity to visit VAI to learn about our postdoc training opportunities, meet one-on-one with our internationally recognized faculty and explore our extensive scientific resources.

  • VAI will provide transportation, lodging and meals for selected applicants. We also are pleased to offer family care grants for those caring for children or other family members.
  • Eligibility: Applicants must be current graduate students at U.S. institutions who anticipate beginning a postdoc by January 2024. Individuals who identify as members of underrepresented racial and ethnic groups are strongly encouraged to apply. Preference will be given to U.S. citizens and permanent residents.
  • Applications are due at 11:59 p.m. ET on July 1.

Cancer Epigenetics Training program (funded by a National Cancer Institute T32 award)

  • Offers cutting-edge, interdisciplinary research training in structural and functional aspects of epigenetics, complemented by state-of-the-art Core Technologies and Services, unique professional development activities, and integration with established translational research programs and partnerships led by VAI investigators.
  • Prepares postdocs to become independent research leaders in the field of cancer epigenetics.
  • Eligibility: Applicants must be near completion of a Ph.D., M.D. or other appropriate terminal degree Applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents. Individuals who identify as members of underrepresented racial and ethnic groups are strongly encouraged to apply.
  • Applications are accepted on a rolling basis.

Inspire Fellowship

  • Supports postdocs who identify as members of underrepresented racial or ethnic groups as they finish preparing to be independent research leaders in academia or industry.
  • Provides $50,000 per year toward the Inspire Fellow’s salary, which starts at $57,200. Support is renewable for up to two additional years (so three years total).
  • Inspire Fellows form a cohort that meets for monthly professional development events.
  • Eligibility: Applicants must be within 12 months of completing a Ph.D., M.D. or other appropriate terminal degree. Applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents who identify as members of an underrepresented racial or ethnic group as defined by NIH.

Travel Awards

The Cell Bio 2022 Travel Grants Are Now Open

The travel grant, sponsored by IPERT/NIH, is a MAC grant for underrepresented minorities. These grants cover up to $1,800 depending on existing funding applicant has to attend the meeting.

Eligibility: Junior faculty, postdocs, graduate students, and undergraduate students who are U.S. citizens or permanent residents.

Application requirements: Abstract submission/number, CV, letter of recommendation from advisor (letters for undergrad, grad and postdocs only)

Familycare Grants- Applications are now open and approved applications will be reimbursed for childcare expenses to attend the ASCB 2022 Cell Bio. The deadline for the Familycare Grant is August 15. More info/Apply

COMPASS Outreach Grants- ASCB members can apply for up to $1,000 to promote science outreach projects such as student lab visits, science fairs, or other ideas for engaging the public. PAIR-UP Imaging Science Program for Black Imaging Scientists- The PAIR-UP Imaging Science Program is a consortium of Black Imaging Scientists who use/build/support advanced imaging techniques in the biomedical sciences.
