Things to Do

Erie CanalRochester is located in Upstate New York, between Lake Ontario and the Finger Lakes region. Rochester is New York's third-largest metropolitan area, and yet still has a cost of living significantly below the national average, which makes it an affordable place to live on a Graduate student salary.

If you are into being outdoors and living an active lifestyle, Rochester is a perfect place to be.  Home to over 3,500 acres of nationally recognized parks, and the nearby Finger Lakes and Adirondack mountains, Rochester has you covered whether your interest be in running, hiking, skiing, snowboarding, ice skating, or water sports. There are also various sports leagues throughout the year such as Kickball, Ultimate Frisbee, Wiffleball, Soccer, Hockey, and many others.

If you prefer a vibrant entertainment scene, Rochester has many options to cater to those interests as well.  Rochester is home to the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra, Geva Theater, Downstairs Cabaret, and Eastman School of Music, and also boasts numerous festivals throughout the year, including the Lilac Festival, Jazz Festival and Fringe Festival.  Additionally, our bars and restaurants offer many different options for entertainment and socializing.  We have "barcades" (bar arcades), high-end restaurants and affordable local eateries, and multiple local breweries and third-wave coffee shops. Rochester is also home to the Rochester Public Market, which is a huge farmers' market in the city where local farmers and artisans sell their goods on Saturday mornings. In addition to being affordable and dynamic, Rochester has many other benefits, including short commute times of 10-20 minutes, and a tempered climate.
