YoUR Journey Begins...

Congratulations on receiving an interview invitation from the UniversityPicture of Associate Dean of Admissions Dr. Flavia Nobay
of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry!

Your combination of intelligence, empathy and curiosity made you a
standout from the over 5500 applications we received this year. During
the interview process at the University of Rochester, our goal is to
showcase the wonderful opportunities we offer in our curriculum: from
combined advanced degrees and advanced research to meaningful
community and global engagement experiences.

Despite our deep disappointment that your experience with us will not be
in person for the 2021-2022 interview cycle; we want to assure you that
we are working our hardest to create an almost equivalent virtual
experience.  Our hope is that during your time with us, you will immerse
yourself in our community, give us the opportunity to get to know you
and for you to see the full reach of possibility available for you here the
University of Rochester.

Meliora!

Getting Ready

We look forward to getting to know you better virtually. While we would love to personally meet you, these are unprecedented times, and as the world shifts, we shift with it. Ideally, you'd spend the full day with us to take advantage of engaging with medical students, faculty and staff. Normally, we'd present you information on the interview day, but as you will not be here in person, it is important that you read the information below, as well as make sure the following is completed in order for the day to run smoothly online.

Interview Day:

Select Date: Dates are reserved on a first come, first-served basis. Please login through the Applicant Portal to schedule your interview. You will need to:

  • Enter Social Security Number
  • Upload your photo
  • Fill out the Virtual Interview Attestation
  • Indicate "where will you be on your interview day?" (Specify state or time zone or international location)
  • Fill out your 3 most significant Activities*
  • Fill out 2 Short Answer Essays*

*Please note:  It is advised that you submit these components as soon as possible following your interview confirmation. In the event that these activities and essays are not
submitted five (5) business days prior to your interview date the University of Rochester School of Medicine Admissions Office reserves the right to withdraw your application without further notification.

If you are interviewing for the MD/PhD Program (MSTP), you will also need to:

  • List graduate faculty you would like to interview with (up to 10)

Please note: In the event that your requested faculty members are not provided ten (10) business days in advance, the University of Rochester School of Medicine MSTP Office reserves the right to withdraw your application without further notification.

YoUR Day

All in-person visits are on hold. Admissions will revisit COVID-19 visitation regulations at the end of 2021.

Normally, your visit would consist of a full day of meetings with faculty, students and staff. This will still be the case, with some modifications. Your interview day will include two one on-one interviews with members of our faculty and students, as well as a small group discussion. There will be a pre-filmed guided tour and a live Zoom student panel in place of our in person tour and panel hosted once a week. (This may not be the same day as your interview).

The small group discussion will include the applicants interviewing with you that day and will be facilitated by a member of the admissions community. The discussion will center around an ethical issue in medicine and no special preparation is needed. This format is a way to help us get to know you better through small group dynamics and introduce you to your potential future colleagues.

Participation in the interviews and small group session are considered mandatory so that your application may be advanced to our committee for final decisions.

Important Documents

The Student-To-Student Guide (aka "Blue Book") is a URMC tradition, and medical students have put tons of thought and effort into this book. The Blue Book builds upon the foundation of wisdom laid down by previous classes to give you the details on courses, textbooks, housing, transportation, student groups, restaurants, entertainment, and just about everything else students have learned during their time in Rochester. Enjoy!! If you are interested in visiting the Rochester area you can view our Explore Rochester guide for more information.

Plan to Enroll and Commit to Enroll Processes and Deadlines

The AAMC has changed its guidelines and resources for schools to report and share acceptance data. In an effort to manage our process this year without over- or under-subscribing our class of 105, we have implemented additional processes to offers of admission. Please carefully review Rochester’s school-specific processes and deadlines detailed below:

February 22nd

  • Applicants have the option to select "Plan to Enroll" through AMCAS' tool Choose Your Medical School.
  • If Rochester is your first choice we encourage, but do not require, you to select "Plan to Enroll".

April 15th

  • Per AAMC guidelines, applicants may hold no more than 3 acceptances (if applicable).

May 2nd

  • Applicants may hold only 1 acceptance.
  • Selection of "Plan to Enroll" is required through Choose Your Medical School.
  • "Commit to Enroll" becomes available through Choose Your Medical School.
  • If Rochester is your first choice we encourage you to select this action as early as possible.
  • By selecting this option, you have withdrawn from all other schools, including wait lists.

May 1st - July 6th

  • Per our school-specific processes, if you are holding a position in our class and receive another acceptance offer after April 30th and prior to our July 6th deadline, you must notify us via email within 24 hours, mdadmish@urmc.rochester.edu
  • In this email, you should indicate which school has made the offer, and the amount of time you have to respond to the offer.

July 6th

  • Rochester will require accepted applicants to designate "Commit to Enroll" through AMCAS and withdraw their application (including wait lists) at all other medical schools by midnight Eastern time; 5 weeks prior to Orientation.
  • If an accepted applicant does not "Commit to Enroll" by the deadline, Rochester will rescind their acceptance.
