msed-2 Welcome to the University of Rochester School of Medicine & Dentistry's medical student education update. This quarterly newsletter is a way to keep you connected to medical student education. In this and future newsletters, you will learn about important medical student policies, curriculum updates and innovations, and student and faculty happenings. Flavia Nobay, MD Named SMD's Associate Dean for Admissions

Dr. Flavia Nobay, Associate Professor of Emergency Medicine has been named the Associate Dean for Admissions for the Medical School. We are all very excited to have her in this role as of July 1, 2017.

Medical Student, David Bernstein elected Chair of the AAMC Organization of Student Reps (OSR)

David Bernstein, MD/MBA student at the University of Rochester School of Medicine & Dentistry and Simon Business School, has been selected as the national Chair-Elect of the Association of American Medical Colleges' Organization of Student Representatives (AAMC OSR).

In this role, David will help lead his peers and provide the student voice to the AAMC, a prominent national organization dedicated to serving and supporting academic medicine and the health of all Americans. His position, effective immediately, is a three-year term starting with Chair-Elect and proceeding through Chair and Immediate Past Chair. Over the next three years, David will serve in a number of national leadership capacities, including serving on the AAMC OSR Administrative Board, sitting on the Group on Student Affairs Steering Committee, guiding national efforts to improve academic medicine and planning long-term strategies for success within the organization. In addition, he will be a sounding board for all medical students with concerns or queries regarding academic medicine.

You are invited to attend the annual AOA lecture, which will take place on Wednesday, February 22 from 4:00-5:00 pm in the Class of '62 Auditorium. The keynote speaker is Dr. Michael Mendoza, Associate Professor of Family Medicine & Nursing and Commissioner of Public Health for the Department of Health, Monroe County, speaking on Humanism and the Art of Physician Wellness. Teaching Opportunities at the University of Rochester School of Medicine

There are many opportunities to teach medical students at URSMD. Different formats and options include:

  • Clinical Teaching in the clerkships
  • Small Group teaching
  • Serving as a Problem Based Learning tutor
  • Serving as preceptor for 1st and 2nd year medical students in primary care offices
