Macrophage phagocytosis in inflammation and cancer
We are looking for a highly motivated, dedicated, and team-oriented postdoctoral fellow who shares our passion for basic and translational science and who seeks to work, learn and grow in a very positive, supportive, innovative, and productive lab environment.
Macrophages are a phenotypically diverse, multifunctional population of immune cells that play key roles in maintaining normal tissue function, immune defense against pathogens and regulating of tissue inflammation. In recent years, macrophages have become attractive targets in the treatment of many different types of solid tumors and hematologic malignancies. Our lab is particularly interested in understanding the molecular and cellular mechanisms of macrophage phagocytosis and inflammatory responses in cancer and aging in order to identify novel therapeutic interventions to treat cancer and other inflammation-related diseases. Our approaches to investigate these processes utilize human and mouse models of disease and employ state-of-the-art genetic, molecular and imaging approaches. Through ongoing collaborations with multiple clinical and translational research labs at the University of Rochester, we have developed a number of exciting new macrophage-focused projects with direct relevance to the treatment of chronic lymphocytic leukemia, myelodysplastic syndrome, and age-related hematopoietic dysfunction.
This position is for up to 3 years and is funded by multiple grants from the National Institutes of Health and other sources. Work will be carried out in the Elliott Lab in the Center for Vaccine Biology and Immunology (CVBI). The outstanding faculty, staff and trainees in the CVBI foster a highly interactive and collaborative training experience that provides the setting for innovative immunology research for postdoctoral fellows who seek to further their research careers in immunology.
Strong candidates will have:
- MD or PhD in Immunology or related field
- Meaningful experience in applied molecular biology
- Direct experience working with mice and with tissue culture techniques
- Experience in flow cytometry, gene expression analyses and antibody-based assays
- One or more first author publication in a peer-reviewed journal
- A strong work ethic with a high level of self-motivation and the ability to work effectively both independently and within a team
- Strong oral and written communication skills
- Ability to apply for competitive fellowship grants
