The University of Rochester has many individuals and departments working and volunteering in Global Health. Keeping track of so much activity can be a challenge. The resources on this site can assist in better understanding the breadth and depth of Global Health activities at the University of Rochester.
At this time, there is no Center for Global Health at the University of Rochester. But there is much happening in Global Health at the University. Individuals routinely travel overseas to provide care in less developed countries. A number of researchers devote much of their professional time to study problems overseas. Telemedicine is being explored to provide expertise to areas lacking in specialists. Some Departments have very active Global Health programs. Family Medicine has a project site in Honduras with faculty and residents visiting this ongoing project twice a year for two weeks. Medical students can apply for a focused experience in Global Health, as well as get funding for summer experience, and even a select few can take a year out to design and implement a project in a less developed country.
Why do people choose to work and volunteer overseas or cross-culturally? For many reasons. However, the desire to give back, and to help those who seem to have so little are common themes. Sometimes, just the excitement of experiencing new cultures and new challenges can be a large part of the motivation. For the vast majority of people spending time working cross-culturally, a feeling of getting back at least as much as was given out is stated as a motivator.

The Department of Pediatrics and the Forbes Visiting Scholar Committee would like to invite you to a community panel discussion with Robert W. Blum, MD, MPH, PhD and local leaders in our community. Dr. Blum is the Emeritus William H. Gates, Sr. Professor, Bloomberg School of Public Health and the immediate past Director of Johns Hopkins Urban Health Institute.
The event will be held at the East High School, Collaboratorium Room (1801 E. Main Street, Rochester 14609) on Wednesday, October 30th, 6:00 – 7:30PM. Light refreshments will be served.

Staying Safe While Overseas
The UR now has an Office dedicated to assisting global travelers stay safe. The UR Office for Global Engagement can help travelers access the UR-provided medical evacuation insurance, track where travelers are overseas and update them about possible threats, and provide pre-trip resources on staying safe.
